The vote-recall data shown in Table 7.1 make possible two different sets of comparisons. First, Table 7.1a shows for each party how those who had voted for it in 1992 behaved in 1997. This record provides both a measure of the voter-retention rate achieved by each party and an indication of the destination of those who defected. Second, using Table 7.1b, one can compare the 1997 supporters of each party to see what proportion of that support was made up of loyal voters and what proportion was due to gains made in 1997, either at the expense of other parties or from the ranks of those who had not voted in 1992.3
